Ubuntu Developer Summit Day 1

The day started out with a large meeting welcoming everyone to UDS-Maverick and the introduction of the Ubuntu: Maverick Meerkat. Slated for an October 2010, this will build on the base that is Lucid Lynx, 10.04 LTS. So far, the day has been a whirlwind of meetings with some very good discussions and ideas presented both for the new release and for changing how we do things in general.

One of the things I've sat in on involved getting better communication with the community at large in terms of QA testing. Ideas were presented on how to get the community more involved in testing, how to get our information disseminated to the community during test cycles, and ways to recognize community members who contribute to the testing effort.

This is something I think is very important. Canonical may be a company, but it still understands that we depend on the community, and though the QA team as whole has more than doubled over the last 12 months, there is no way we could get the work done without members of the Linux community in general and Ubuntu fans specifically helping out.

Later that day:

I thought I'd just add to this instead of starting an entirely different post now that Day One is over. It's been a long, yet interesting day here in Belgium. The sun was even out and warmed things up for a bit :-)

So far, I've certainly enjoyed myself, and I can understand what they mean by UDS being exhausting. I've been in meeting after meeting since 09:00 this morning and while I certainly enjoyed it, I'm glad it's over. Now i just need to find something for dinner and unwind.

One thing I've noticed though is that there are a LOT of people here. The sessions have anywhere from a small handful of people to a large crowd and can become quite intense at times. In the hallways, spaces are packed almost wall to wall with people and the noise is a cacophony of chatter. I realized, sitting outside just after lunch, how much I really enjoy sitting outside at home, on my deck, enjoying the deafening sound of silence. I've never done well in crowds anyway, but as I've gotten older, I realize that I truely enjoy my alone time. Nothing like sitting outside with a nice cup of tea and just listening to nature.

So now the question is, "What do I do?" I guess first thing to do is dinner. There's supposed to be some sort of cook-out or whatever and then, who knows what. Maybe I'll go for a walk, or perhaps see if I can find some geocaches nearby. Either way, I'm jet lagged, mentally exhausted, and that spa with the 90 Euro massages is starting to sound like a REAL good idea.

Ciao from Belgium...
