Jeff Lane dot Org -:- I drank what?

Rubbing one out before the end of the year

I have to admit, it's been a bit of a bitch of a year. With the economy being what it is, I spent 6 months as a ward of the state while I tried to find a new job. The last two weeks of the year have been spent sick, sometimes dizzy, coughing, sneezing, and otherwise miserable. My new job has mostly been boring, we were unable to get pregnant and really, it seems everyone else has just passed me by.

The year had it's good points too, though. A full week spent out in the Smokys, winding my Miata around the twisties, tires squealing, brakes smoking, wind in my hair. I reconnected with Liisa Allison, one of my best friends from the days of Fort Lewis Rescue Squad. I spent an awesome 4th of July at my friend Tucker's house, drunk as can be with better than $1200 worth of explosives. Had an awesome night in Myrtle Beach for Tucker's birthday, a good deal of which I don't remember, but I KNOW it was fun (I saw boobies!). Got to dress up as the Scotch Korean for Halloween and again hit a great party, drank a good bit more than usual, and enjoyed myself. Spent three weeks at the Beach "house sitting" and having a ball.

The downsides were pretty harsh though, but I'm not bitter. Not really. And certainly not tonight. Though the year has had it's challenges, today has been glorious. I woke up late this morning. Well, OK, that's not really a good thing, but I woke up on my own at least. Drove in to work and sat there for two hours. During that time, I put some finishing touches on some code I've been working on. Then they sent me home at 11:30am. These days are always good. Work for two or three hours and then bill a full day. But it just got better from there.

On the way home, I tried out my new Geomate, Jr. The Geomate is a small, purpose built GPS receiver made specifically for geocaching. So I spent about 45 minutes or so on the drive home treasure hunting and found all three of the geocaches that I went after. Pretty cool!

I made it home to find that USA was running a marathon of Burn Notice, and I already had about 12 hours of episodes on the DVR, so I got to spend several hours watching what really is a great show. After Dana got up, we fixed some Buffalo Chicken Cheese dip and sat down to watch the Chic-fil-a bowl on ESPN.

The Hokies played the best game of the season tonight. They really owned UT. Hell, even the offense was spot on for once. Very few mistakes were made, and even though there were a couple injuries, the Hokies maintained their energy and won the bowl game 37-14. I think UT was probably a bit off tonight, but even so, the Hokies played wonderfully.

Towards the end of the game, I really got a craving for a milkshake. Of course, being New Year's Eve, no places are open within a short drive that would have milkshakes. As luck would have it, I managed to find a box of frozen strawberries, just enough vanilla ice cream and some milk. So now I sit here, typing this in between sips on a delicious strawberry milkshake.

Today really has been good, and I can end the year happy. Still sick, but happy, as I welcome 2010 watching Travis Pastrana jump a Subaru WRX STi 200 feet into the water in Long Beach at Midnight. Going out and coming in with a bang.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
