Earlier today I sent a brief, enigmatic message via Twitter that simply said "Holy crap... I got it..." and that was all. I didn't want to say anything more than that simple phrase until I got a second e-mail confirming certain things. Now that I have, I can say more about the "It" that I got... and no, Holly did NOT give me any diseases ;-)
It started out like this when my team lead came into the lab, "Mike, we need to have a chat. I've got good news and I've got bad news..."
"The bad news is yours, " said I, "and that news is that I have 2 weeks left to live." Time in the big lab is measured in lifespan. I'm now a short timer, and have but two weeks left in the lab I've called home for over 6 years now.
"The good news is mine. I've accepted a position at Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu Linux."
And there it is. Starting 22 February, I'll be working for Canonical as a Hardware Certification Engineer, part of the QA Team. Some aspects of the job will be similar to the work I've been doing for the last several years but there will also be a good opportunity to expand into other areas and grow as well.
I'm very excited about this and I really can't wait to start. And I can honestly say, it pays to have a broadband internet connection ;-)
