God Rest Your Soul, Pope John Paul II

[note] that was also posted on 3 April 2005

Yesterday, which was about last night in Italy, John Paul the Second passed away. He was 84 years old, and had lived an amazing life. Now I am not Catholic, and in fact, I am not even all that Religious, but I do respect what he did, what he tried to do, and the conviction with which he lived his life. I dont have to agree with the man to respect him.

He was the first non-Italian pope elected in over 475 years, so that says something special about the man. He survived the Nazi occupation of Poland through the late 30's and 40's and became a priest in secret as his way of fighting the evil that was Nazi Germany. He was a man who, while holding what is arguably the highest and most powerful position of anyone in any religion today, was still approachable and came acros as one of the common people.

I hope the next pope will be worty of filling his shoes. With all the blows that the Catholic Church has taken lately, what with boy hungry priests and leaders who would rather sweep the problems under the rug than confront them directly, He shined brightly as a symbol of hope, faith, and love. He truely loved all people, whether he agreed with them or not, and made it his duty to reach out to all people of all faiths in the hopes that we could all live together, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindi, or whatever.

Rest in Peace John Paul II...
