A little bit about Linux on Netbooks

Netbooks are quickly gaining popularity among computer users the world over. Their small footprint, long battery life, cheap price and ease of use make them ideal for carrying around town, to and from school, at work and even during travel. Pretty much all major computer vendors now sell a netbook of some sort, from Dell to HP to Lenovo and many others, and they continue to gain a strong foothold in the portable computing world.

Netbooks are generally light weight, general purpose machines. They use smaller, slower processors (the Intel Atom seems to be the most popular, IMO), many use solid state drives instead of traditional spinning platters, and most definitely do not come with optical drives (CD/DVD drives). They usually ship with Windows XP (Just when Microsoft thought that they could kill off XP, here comes the netbook) and more and more, you can buy them pre-loaded with Linux. read more »

Holy crap... I got it... now with juciy detail

Tags:

Earlier today I sent a brief, enigmatic message via Twitter that simply said "Holy crap... I got it..." and that was all. I didn't want to say anything more than that simple phrase until I got a second e-mail confirming certain things. Now that I have, I can say more about the "It" that I got... and no, Holly did NOT give me any diseases ;-)

It started out like this when my team lead came into the lab, "Mike, we need to have a chat. I've got good news and I've got bad news..."  read more »

I know a fucking pedo... or: Someone I know will soon be making sweet, sweet butt love in prison

Update:

I've had a bit of time to think about this now, and I am still in a sort of shock over this. I'm usually, almost always, an excellent judge of character. In this case, I was horribly, horribly wrong. This was a guy that was part of my circle of friends back in my early 20s. I met him because one of my friends was a friend of his sister, and as things went, we all hung out together for a number of years. But still, in my mind, I'm still stuck in a state of WTF regarding this.

I think I would be less shocked about it had he been involved in dealing drugs or even murder. I mean, this guy was around to see my god daughters growing. Hell, he even stayed at my apartment in Durham a few times, alone with my wife, while I was at work. It just goes to show that sometimes you never really know someone. Also, I could even be, while disgusted, at least less shocked, if this was a first time thing, but apparently, this has happened 4 times now.

Doing some research, I see that he's pretty much skated incarceration or any "real" punishment until now. The third time got him registered as a sex offender, but why did it take until now to get him held without bail. Sadly, I think this is another example of the system failing to protect the people it's supposed to. It happens, but it's still not terribly palatable when it does.

We lost touch shortly after I moved to North Carolina, and to be honest, I stopped talking to him because I grew tired of the constant fighting with his ex-wife, and just certain other things that rubbed me the wrong way. But still, to think that I was THAT wrong in my impressions of someone is somewhat disturbing.

But that's all I'm going to say about it at this point. For now, he's behind bars where he should be, and without bail, and hopefully this time, the system will work, and he won't be able to do things like this again. As someone who has no kids, but has tried to have them for years, the fact that people out there DO do these things to children remains as one of the few things that really frightens me. "Dr. Who and my ex-fiancee's mom want me to buy V1agra" or "The joys of random spam generators."

I was just perusing the spam folder on one of my GMail accounts. I do that from time to time, just to double check that nothing "real" has inadvertently been filtered. I don't auto-delete spam because I'm just a bit mistrusting of filters, having been in the position of actually writing them at one point in my career. I find spam to be a bit amusing as well, when they're well crafted.

I usually don't really care for the spastic random nonsense that ends up in the Subject: field of an e-mail, especially after receiving the 100th e-mail in a row stating that "A message has been received from Alexandra K." I don't know who the hell Alexandra K. is, but she must be terribly lonely, unemployed and bored to send me all the e-mail that she does. read more »
