A Last Act of Love from Jack's Adopted Sister, Patches

Once we found out what was wrong with our little boy, we made the decision to euthanize him on Saturday. I sent this to bc-l on Thursday Sept 27, after finally making arrangements with Dr. Adriano Betton, the best Vet Jack ever had:

The date is set for Saturday afternoon. That gives us one last full
day with Jack. I am hoping to make it a day of sun and grass, steak
and fries. I don't know that he'll really notice, but he may. He
still wags his tail at the sound of my voice, even though he can't see
me.

I did finally cry a little, but just a little. I can't let it go.
Not yet. I'll do that Saturday. But for now, I have to be strong. I
have to be the strong one for Jack, for my other dogs and for my wife.
But tonight I did let it out just a bit.

We had taken him outside after much coaxing to get him to follow our
voices to the sliding glass door, out onto the deck and finally to
where we could pick him up and carry him down the steps. We set him
down in the grass and once he realised were he was, he made his way
around the yard finding that perfect spot to potty. He wandered
around the yard a bit more, and finally laid down in the grass and
just listened.

It was fairly quiet out, even with the nearly full moon and two other
dogs out roaming the yard. Finally, Patches came over and gave Jack a
sniff. She sniffed at him in the house a time or two as well. She
knows whats going on. I can tell in the way she has been acting the
last day or so. She well knows what is going to happen, I think. But
I digress.

What finally put me into tears and left my wife and I standing arm in
arm under the stars, sobbing uncontrollably was Patches. Outside, she
walked up to him and sniffed at his face. She then sniffed at his
tail, and his back legs. She sniffed along his back and finally
looked at him and put a paw on his leg and gave him a little push.
The watched, and then repeated the gentlest gesture, putting her paw
on him and just nudging a little. Then as silently as she has been
all evening, Patches lay down in the grass next to Jack and watched
over him.
